Why People Take Drugs

First, read Weil, Chapter 6, Why People Take Drugs, first published in 1972. Of particular importance to this activity are pages 77 (second to last paragraph) through 80. Also the slides.

Do a substance-free activity with the specific intention of altering your state of consciousness. Some possibilities are the following: see a movie or play in a theater, ride a rollercoaster, receive a massage, reiki or acupuncture, immerse yourself in a guided meditation or religious ceremony. There are also videos online that attempt to simulate a psychedelic experience through guided meditation, breathing, audio and visual stimulation, or ASMR triggering. If you find any good videos, you may share with the class under the FAQ. In order to maximize the opportunity for a positive experience, arrange both your set and setting (defined by Weil, first full paragraph on page 77).

Describe your experience and relate it to Weils characteristics of altered states of consciousness (page 78 paragraph starting, Nevertheless, I think it is possible to come to some useful conclusions about altered states of consciousness through page 79). Which of these did you experience? Where would you rate your experience on the continuum?

In your conclusion, reflect upon your experience for this activity as well as drug use generally as a way to alter consciousness. Weil states that altered states of consciousness have great potential for strongly positive psychic development (p. 79-80). He argues that the drive to alter consciousness in itself is neither good nor bad, although it can lead to harmful behaviors or experiences. In this exercise or in your life have you experienced any benefits? Any negative consequences?

Style and formatting: Papers should be written in formal, professional, academic style. Two pages double-spaced should be enough room to address the prompt. You should write a longer essay, then reduce it by editing. You do not need a works cited page. Credit Weil and any websites or videos you used for the activity in parentheses in the essay. For example: “I experienced a guided meditation (www….).” As Weil states, “…” (p. 78, 1972).

Explanation of your experience (including set and setting)

List four of Weils characteristics of altered states of consciousness

Applying your experience to at least two of those characteristics

Conclusion (state criticism and/or support for Weils theory & relate to drug use and society’s response to drug use)
