Essay guidelines:
our introductory paragraph should use one of the seven types of hooks described in The Essay and its Parts and must contain an effective thesis statement that clearly states your position pro or con on the topic. Limit introductory paragraph length to six to eight sentences.
Body paragraphs should develop your position based on the organization established by the thesis. Use keyword (or buzzword) repetition in topic sentences to enhance paragraph cohesion. Supporting elements in each paragraph should contain short quotations, summaries, or paraphrases of the authors texts. Include short anecdotal information if it is relevant to your position.
You should also include counter arguments any place in the body. Further, you may critically assess each authors claims, evidence, assumptions, language and tone, reasonableness, and fallacies. Limit body paragraphs to the 100-to-200-word range each.
our conclusion should reinforce your thesis, but it can go further than that by making suggestions, recommendations for further action, or predict possible positive or negative outcomes. Avoid tagging your conclusion using clichd phrases: in conclusion, to conclude, finally, to summarize, to finish, etc. Think of other ways to begin your conclusion.
Your paper must:
Contain an argumentative thesis that clearly states a pro or con position.
Be at least four pages long–four full pages is the minimum length. You can go over that length because it is better to write too much than too little.
Use an original title different than “Essay #1”.
Use a minimum of three different outside sources. At least one must be from the PA text.
Use a minimum of three concise quotations from PA text articles or outside sources.
Attach a works cited page to document all sources used.
Cite sources in MLA format both parenthetically and in the works cited page.
Limit outside source material to no more than 20% of your entire papers contents.Use standard MLA formatting throughout the essay.
