In this assignment, you are required to understand and apply the main issues and principles
discussed in the chapters on late childhood and adolescence development.
Your task is to interview at least one adolescent (age between 13 to 18 years old), who is of
a different ethnicity than yourself, to find out his/her main challenges during this stage of
life compared to their late childhood. For instance, in exploring their adolescences thoughts
and experiences, compare them with their thoughts and feelings during late childhood. For
example;
What are some noticeable changes that are taking place, physically, cognitively, or
socioemotionally?
What was his/her relationship like with his/her parents, siblings, peers, and elders or
teachers in the community?
Does he/she feel very different from how he/she felt in late childhood?
What is his/her view regarding issues such as studies, sexuality, drugs, marriage, careers,
or other major issues during the adolescent stage of life?
After that, compare this adolescents experience with your own journey of growing up
during the similar stages (late childhood through adolescence).
Alternatively, you can also interview two (instead of one) adolescents of different ethnicity
for comparison (for this option, you do not need to compare with your own experience).
Write up a report that is not more than 2000 words.
Your report will be assessed according to the following categories:
1. Compare and contrast the major processes/changes (biological, cognitive,
socioemotional) experienced by the adolescent whom you have interviewed, with your
own experiences. Provide specific examples to illustrate your points. Also, highlight and
discuss changes that the adolescent considers as challenges for this stage of life. [If you
interviewed two adolescents, compare and contrast their experiences instead.]
(Note: You dont need to make reference to theories for this question.)
(30 marks)
2. Critically discuss the theories and/or principles you have learnt in the chapters on
adolescence (e.g., the physical, cognitive, and socioemotional development) by
elaborating the expected growth and changes during the adolescence stage. Within your
discussion, apply these principles and ideas to understand how the developmental
processes have contributed to the main challenges faced by adolescents in general and the
adolescents that you are analysing (i.e., based on either one interviewee and yourself; or
two interviewees).
(Note: you may use the anecdotes from your interview analysis as specific real-life
examples to illustrate your points.)
(40 marks)
3. Identify and discuss one most interesting/fascinating finding that you have learned from
this mini (informal) research analysis. Also, point out at least one theory or principle that
may have problem to be applied in the Singapore context. Provide clear real-life examples
to illustrate your points.
(20 marks)
4. Briefly describe the rationale(s) behind the choices of your interview questions. (Note: a
copy of your interview questions should be appended at the end of your report.)
