Are you looking for a management career? If you have no intention of moving into a management position, no problem; you can focus on where you are currently and what do you want to do in the next 4 years. Think of this assignment as Designing Your life to quote the book written by two ex. engineers turn professors (Bill Burnett and Dave Evans), currently teaching people how to design their own careers and lives. Start your essay with your background; where you are now. Think about where and what do you want to be in four (4) years? If you still have no clue; Designing Your Lifes authors suggest that you ask yourself what is it that you are curious about (want to learn)? then find out how you can find the answer (through networking).
Write you own job description for the job you want four (4) years from now. You can check online job postings for inspiration. Be creative and be you when writing this ad. Describe your title, responsibilities, degree(s) requirements, benefits, etc.
Create a detailed plan to obtain this job. In the short term, what classes do you need to take? Should you change your major? Do you need a business major or minor or maybe a minor in a foreign language? What kind of summer work experience will move you closer to getting the job you want 4 years from now? What job do you need to get right out of college to obtain the work experience you need? Create a specific plan for each of the 4 years in your career plan, keeping in mind that the plans for later years are likely to change. The value in planning is that it forces you to think about what you want and the steps you can take now to help achieve those goals. * (Use SMART goal planning-see notes below).
Decide when you will monitor and evaluate the progress youre making with your plan. Career experts suggest that every 6 months is about right. Pick two dates and write them in your schedule. Furthermore, right now, before you forget, set five specific, challenging goals that you need to accomplish in the next 6 months in order to achieve your career plans. *Use SMART goal planning (see notes below).
Your career essay should be about 3-5 pages (no more than 5 pages, single-space). Include your name on the upper right-hand corner. No cover page is needed.
