Guidelines for Online Presentations

PART ONE: SUBMIT YOUR ORIGINAL PRESENTATION

1) Introduction: Introduce your topic and tell us why you chose it- brief.

2) Tell us about your topic: The cold hard facts- the brunt of your presentation.

3) Tell us the historical significance of your topic and how it relates to the class- brief also.

4) Conclusion: Wrap it all up!

PART TWO: SUBMIT A RESPONSE

Carefully read over other presentations as they come in and then add a healthy and enlightening Response to 1 other presentation. To avoid a few topics being overrun with Responses, I will only allow 1 person to comment on an Original Response. It is perfectly acceptable for the author of the Original Presentation to respond so that a conversation is created, but it will only be between the Original Presentation author and the first person to offer a Response. This will avoid some Presentations not having any comments and others have far too many.

Simply stated, this is NOT like a Facebook Post or a typical Discussion Board Thread where EVERYONE discusses and comments on numerous topics, just CHOOSE ONE. ALSO, TO AVOID EVEN MORE CONFUSION (LIKE THAT’S POSSIBLE) WHEN YOU HAVE READ A PRESENTATION THAT YOU LIKE AND WANT TO RESPOND TO, SIMPLY RESPOND RIGHT AWAY WITH THIS PHRASE: TAKEN! THIS WILL SECURE THAT PRESENTATION FOR YOU AND GIVE YOU TIME TO RESPOND IN A PROFESSIONAL MANNER WITHOUT FEAR OF SOMEONE ELSE “STEALING” YOUR RESPONSE TOPIC. THEREFORE, YOU WILL TECHNICALLY RESPOND TWICE TO SOMEONE’S POST; THE FIRST TIME CLAIMING IT AND THEN YOUR ACTUAL RESPONSE.

Some helpful ideas:

Be sure to tell us NEW information. Do not just repeat what I have said in class (this will apply to some more than others, i.e. if we haven’t discussed your topic at all in class, this doesn’t apply to you).

Length: A healthy online presentation will be approximately 4-6 paragraphs (600-850 words). However, what is most important here is CONTENT. A presentation of 1000 words that is dull, unclear or hard to follow will score less than a presentation of 500 words that is excellently thought out, clear, and enjoyable to read. In short, the more time you put into the project to demonstrate you know your topic, the better you will do.

In addition, the same rules apply regarding your responses to a classmate’s presentation. Again, the more thought and time you put into your comments, the better you will do. “Wow, what a great presentation.” “I did not know that Ferdinand Porsche was a Nazi!” “Are you sure about all of these facts? You must be though, as I am reading it on the INTERNET!” These are examples of VERY poor responses to Original Presentations. A proper response will ADD to the knowledge already presented and more importantly it will link the topic at hand to something you have learned in class, to a major historical theme we have discussed all semester, or something in the present day. To be blunt, this is your big chance to show me you are thinking historically! A healthy response will be 1-2 paragraphs (150-250 words).

Pictures: If you need pictures to ENHANCE your presentation, that is fine, but DO NOT rely on them for the entire presentation. If you can’t attach a photo, copy and paste it.

Citations: Please use a basic citation(s) at the end of the presentation so I know where you got your information from. DO NOT COPY AND PASTE FROM THE INTERNET OR ANY OTHER SOURCE FOR THAT MATTER! Obviously you will collect information from numerous sources, but you will then put this information in YOUR own words. All submissions will be run through turnitin.com and more importantly, I will know right away if a student wrote something or it has been copied. Any instance of plagiarism will result in an automatic zero for the project and the issue will be referred to the Dean of Humanities.

MOST IMPORTANT NOTE: If you fail to submit your Original Post by the assigned date, you will not receive ANY points for the ENTIRE PROJECT. Therefore, if you fail to submit an Original Post on time, please DO NOT submit a Response to a classmate’s Original Post as this will not earn you any points and more importantly, you will disrupt the time/space continuum and there will not be enough Original Posts for other students to respond to. In short, PLEASE follow the directions and submit the O.G. Post on time.

Potpourri, Alex for $5000: All Original Presentations and all Responses MUST be written in complete, grammatical sentences, fitting for academic discourse. No email or text message argot or abbreviations are allowed and points will be deducted. BTW, DON’T TEST ME ON THIS.

Finally, DO NOT submit your presentation in Power Point and DO NOT attach a Word file for other students to open. You may type the presentation out in Word, but be sure to copy and paste it in the forum so everyone else can simply read your presentation without opening a file. Also, NO VIDEOS!

Rubric

A healthy, living and breathing Original Presentation posted on time- 20 pts (Any deviation from this will have points deducted).

An equally happy Response to an Original Presentation posted on time- 10 pts (Any deviaticixon from this will have points deducted).

Last Completed Projects
