Write a research report on the impact of aces and double faults on tennis match results. Summary: Having played tennis since the age of twelve and presently competing for my school’s varsity team, I have a keen interest in the game, which is why I decided to look into how aces and double faults impact matches. In this investigation, I intend to collect and preprocess data from professional tennis matches before analyzing the relationships between aces and match victories and double faults and match losses using statistical approaches. Statistics, probability, and data visualization will be among the key mathematical topics covered, assisted by spreadsheet software (Excel). Through this exploration, I hope to uncover insights into the impact of aces and double faults on tennis match outcomes. By quantifying these relationships, I aim to contribute valuable information that can be beneficial to both players and myself, potentially aiding in strategic decision-making during matches. My long-standing involvement in tennis as a player, as well as my determination to complete a careful and meaningful study, indicate my personal devotion. My true interest for the sport and its statistical components will fuel the breadth and depth of my studies. IB HL Math Applications IA Data and Outline Assignment For this assignment, you will submit you collected or generated data along with any preliminary tables and graphs as well as a very brief outline of your IA. The outline will be made in the Google Doc attached to this assignment. Requirements (Scoring Criteria): The outline must contain your name and your IA title. All data, graphs, and figures must be identified with titles that indicates what each item is or represents. All data, graphs, and figures must have sources, such as URLs or book citations. The outline must have an introduction section, which may be as short as two to three sentences. The outline must have a procedure section that documents your process, including false starts and brief justifications for selection of mathematical procedures. NOTE: You are NOT required to write complete sentences in this section of the outline. The outline must have a conclusion section, which may be as short as one sentence. General Notes: Items in the outline are not required to be complete sentences or grammatically correct. You should think of this as building the framework for your draft. You are encouraged to add as much detail as possible. The next page has a list of guiding questions to help you organize your outline. I do not expect you to answer them individually. They are there in case you find it helpful to have a specific series of prompts to develop your writing. Framework and Guiding Questions: Below is a general framework for the IA along with a number of guiding questions for each section. You do NOT have to answer the questions individually. The questions are there to help you move forward with each section in case you are not sure what to do next. Introduction What is the project topic and title? Why did you chose this topic? What is the significance of your topic? How could your findings be of importance to others? What math methods will you use? What do you plan to show about this topic using mathematics? Data Collection / Research How was the data collected? How much data did you collect? Do you have enough or too much data? How might that be a problem? Are there possible flaws in your method of data collection? What are your data sources. Are these sources reliable? Explain. NOTE: If you retrieve data from a website, document the website and make a backup of the raw data in Google Sheets. Mathematical Processes Have you done math that is appropriate to the Mathematics Applications and Interpretation HL course? What calculations will you show in your project? How will you show them? How is the quantity of your data important for your math process? How are you working your math (by hand, calculator, Google Sheets, etc.)? What can you conclude from the outcome of your math process? Conclusion What conclusions did you expect from your project? How does the math you use support your conclusions and interpretations? What limitations affected the validity of your project? What have you learned as a result of doing this process? What might you do differently if you were to redo this project? Notation and Terminology: Make a complete list of all vocabulary and formulas you expect to use in your IA. Remember that the intended audience is fellow HL Applications students, so you should focus more on the “Why?” when you are introducing the concepts you use as opposed to the “What?”, though it is good to include brief definitions of terms. Data and Figures: Make a list of all graphs, equations, tables, and other illustrations you intend to include.
