The objective of this assignment is to engage with one of the primary sources relevant to the music we are studying this term. Step 1: Read the following source closely: Excerpt from The Present State of Music (1771) Step 2: Write a 5-7 page paper which discusses your chosen passage in some detail. Begin your paper with an introduction which identifies the source you selected. In the body of your paper consider the style of writing, how the work reflects the styles and attitudes of the period, what kinds of practical information it provides and a summary of its overall effectiveness. Conclude with a description and explanation of your own reaction to the source and an assessment as to whether it is still helpful for musicians today. Remember to check your work for errors in spelling and syntax.
