Answer the following questions, then reply to 2 peers How might you encourage older adults you know (e.g., your grandparents) to age more successfully? What steps would you take? Do you think it would be appropriate to discuss this with them? Why or why not?
peer 1: tuana All of my maternal and paternal grandparents are deceased. My parents are in their early 70s. We discuss health on a normal basis as I suffer from some illnesses as well. My dad joined a walking group in his community and my mom is working on quitting smoking currently. I encourage my mom to eat healthier, my dad already does. In the warmer months, I go walking with my dad to improve his lung functions and mine. I am fortunate to have a pretty good rapport with my parents so discussing health is commonplace. I think open conversation about health is key to healthy living for both the parents and the children (adult).
peer 2: laura I think I will encourage my grandparents to age healthily by incorporating more stretching and taking walks regularly. The most crucial aspect would be emphasizing the importance of consuming whole foods, such as vegetables, fruits, and grains. Foods that come directly from the Earth, as opposed to processed foods. I am already taking some of these steps myself; I exercise at least three times a week, stretch every day, and I strive to prioritize whole foods in my diet, though I do admit to occasional lapses, especially when it comes to my weakness for sweets. I believe it is appropriate to discuss these matters with them because I love them and care deeply about their health and well being. I regularly talk to my mom about it, as maintaining an open dialogue is essential to holding each other accountable in making healthier choices.
