Write a paper on one of the following topics: 1. Feminist philosophers have questioned the false and paradoxical universality of much male-centred political philosophy from Hobbes to Rawls. What is the nature of this paradox, and what assumptions about human beings does it rest on? What would be necessary for a universal political philosophy to be adequate? Make sure to support the answer to this question with solid arguments. 2. Describe Rawls’ notions of the original position, the veil of ignorance, and the two principles of justice. What suggests that the parties in the original position, the ones deliberating behind the veil of ignorance, will select the two principles of justice? Be sure to reinforce your answer with argument(s). 3 Judge Taney’s decision on the Dred Scott v. Standford case draws on a theory of race that was widely accepted until recently. Provide an analysis of this theory, the assumptions on which it rests, and its moral, political, and epistemic implications. How sound is this theory, and how well does it account for, of fail to account for, human nature? 4. From Hobbes to Rawls, the social contract is presented as a reasonable and fair approach to political philosophy. Drawing from Mills and other critical race theorists, what are the weakness of such an approach? ESSAY WRITING INSTRUCTIONS. Form: 1. Type in double space. 2.
