Whose culture has been celebrated and whose excluded in the design of our contemporary environments?
In Class 8, we looked at the birth of contemporary town planning and how the trend of designing Modernist Utopias may have excluded Indigenous culture from its own environments around the world. From replications of the post Renaissance European town plan in colonized cities around the world, to Haussmann’s 19th C Paris, to the exclusion of BIPOC in 20th C US urban planning, to the work of Corbusier, FLW and Kahn around the world—top down urban planning does always come with an undertone of violence. Yet, in a post colonial world, questions probing indigenous heritage, hybrid indigenous-colonial heritage, so also Modernist heritage in the architecture and environmental design of our contemporary environments can only have complicated, nuanced answers.
