Paragraph 1 (Introduction) The first paragraph should introduce the subject matter of the article in an interesting and engaging manner. Make the audience want to continue reading beyond the first sentence. What was happening at the time that the source was created? You are expected to use information gained from class lectures and the textbook to give historical context to the time period: the social, political, cultural, economic, or environmental situations that influenced the events in the article. You should identify the author, title of the article, and their thesis: What point is the author trying to convey; what historical situation does the author seek to explore and explain? Paragraphs 2-4 (Themes) Identify and discuss 2-3 themes and why you believe they are important to the story. What are the underlying ideas or messages that you find in the reading? Some possible examples may include perseverance, power, liberty, greed, and hypocrisy among many others. Summarize the evidence and examples the author uses to support these themes. Paragraphs 5-6 (Analysis) Discuss what you perceive to be the strengths and weaknesses of the article. For example, the strengths could be the contribution to historical understanding, or the writing style. On the other hand, weaknesses could be complexity of terminology used or the lack of documentation. What was their purpose and intended audience? Does the author reveal anything about general societal attitudes (e.g. towards religion, race)? Is there evidence of bias? Why do you feel this reading may or may not be a reliable source? Paragraph 6/7 (Conclusion) Revisit the author’s thesis and discuss whether or not you believe the article defended it (the thesis). Tell the reader if you believe this article effectively contributes to the body of existing literature on this subject. Provide two examples to support your point of view. How does this source best relate to current events and/or issues in modern society? What possible solutions to societal issues does this source help you to produce?
