OVERVIEW
The purpose of the journal writing is to develop analytical and critical thinking skills regarding
persuasion theory and techniques.
INSTRUCTIONS
Write a fully-developed paragraph for each question. The instructor will be looking for
substantive answers that show interaction/engagement with the reading and application to
persuasive situations. You should demonstrate academic writing. Points will be deducted for
answers that are not fully developed. Be sure to number each question. It should be clear to the
reader, where the question/answer begins and ends. For example, post your question/answer like
this:

Questions:
1. Read the Generational Differences Chart in the Learn section. Look specifically at
attitude differences and values on retirement, education, fundraising, work and family
balance communication and values. Are you surprised? Are there some areas where you
disagree with the study or do you think the conclusions are fairly accurate?
2. Read the following internet article: Patricia Buckley, Peter Viechnicki, Akur Barua. “A
New Understanding of Millennials: Generational Differences Reexamined” in the
Learn section. Are you surprised by any of the characteristics of the millennials? Does it
help you understand the values of people that belong to this age and culture
group? Summarize their values in two short sentences. What are the problems they are
facing? Why don’t they own cars?
3. Applying information from the articles above, write a short paragraph analyzing the
demographics of the audience members you will be speaking to in your second
speech. What values and beliefs are foundational for you to understand in order to
connect with them? What approach do you think will work to convince them to take the
course of action you are advocating? Be strategic and specific in your answer.
4. When considering ethos, pathos, and logos stylistic approaches, what method(s) do you
think, based on their attitudes and values, will work best with the audience type you will
be speaking before in your second speech? Please show some analysis in your answer.
5. In general, how would your speaking approach differ if you were speaking to a group of
traditionalist or millennialist?
