Qualitative research design entail gathering and interpreting non-numerical data. Some of the sources of qualitative data used include interviews, focus groups, documents, personal accounts or papers, cultural records and observations (Doyle, et al., 2020). When conducting qualitative study, researchers may use interviews or focus groups to collect data that is not available in existing documents or records. To allow freedom for varied or unexpected answers, interviews and focus groups may be unstructured or semi-structured. An unstructured and semi-structured approaches enable researcher to ask open-ended questions and follow the lead as directed by the responses. The responses provide an in-depth view individuals experiences which are then compared with those of other participants in the study. In quantitative research, the data collection methods applied in collection of data involve compilation of numerical data to test causal relationships among variables. Some methods of collecting the numerical data include experiments, questionnaires, surveys and database reports (Rutberg & Bouikidis, 2018).
Descriptive research design is a quantitative approach that is applied in description of concepts or variables, with a goal of identifying the possible relationships and elucidate the differences between two groups. Descriptive research design when there is inadequate information about a particular phenomenon and the information gathered in the process could be used as the foundation of further research. In qualitative research design, the main focus is on the lived perspective of the participants through observation or their own words. Therefore, there are no statistics and there may be few numbers in a qualitative research report (Doyle, et al., 2020).
