Over the past couple of weeks, we have read chapter 6 of Blind Spot and watched and/or read several sources that reveal ways people are impacted as a result of stereotypes and the ways our society teaches and reinforces these biases. In Chimamanda Ngozi Adichies The Danger of a Single Story she argues that a one dimensional view of a social group or culture can contribute to bias and ultimately lead to potentially damaging judgment. Your second essay is going to give you the opportunity to analyze and explore these ideas of
stereotype and bias.
Please select one of the flowing prompts:
1. Choose an identity revealed in The Danger of a Single Story, Born a Crime, or an identity of your choice and use the ideas from The Danger of a Single Story and chapter 6 of Blindspot to analyze the ways that our society, our culture, and institutions create single stories or stereotypes that dehumanize people with this identity.
2. In Chapter 6 of Blindspot, Banaji and Greenwald argue that the most serious consequences of stereotypes is their role in causing violence, imprisonment, even death; and their role in cutting off opportunities that make for a full and productive life (95). Using an identity from one of our readings or an identity of your choice, write a well-developed essay where support or refute this argument presented in Blindspot.
3. In Trevor Noahs book Born a Crime he describes his life growing up as a biracial child in a heavily segregated country where race and skin color have such polarizing effects. Write an essay where you use ideas presented in Blindspot and/or Danger of a Single Story to analyze his experiences and how he was affected by stereotyping and/or bias.
Criteria for Paper
Contain an introduction which prepares your reader for this issue and presents a clear controlling idea (thesis) which is argued for the rest of the essay
Contain a conclusion where you provide final analysis or a clear so what?: consider the consequences or impacts of the stereotypes or biases youve identified
Be divided into paragraphs which each address no more than one main idea
Use examples and relevant ideas, information, and quotes demonstrating your familiarity with at least 2 of the sources weve read and/or watched (Greenwald and Banaji, Adichi, or Noah). Note: A paper that does not contain at least two quotes or paraphrases for at least two of our assigned readings cannot pass
Have well framed quotes/paraphrases where you both introduce the source and provide analysis explaining how the section of text is related to your argument.
Assume your audience has not read the assigned essays or our book. That means youll need to briefly introduce and summarize key ideas/information and explain any unfamiliar terms
Be approximately (750-1000 words), typed, double spaced, 12-point font
Follow MLA formatting and contain a works cited page
