Coursework Portfolio
Coursework Case Studies

The coursework for this module is a body of work involving a mix of collaborative andindividual tasks based on the practical study of histopathology and haematologycases.

The aim here is to allow you to bring theory into practice in the interpretationof pathology, analysis of self-generated data and a discussion contextualisingmodern pathology practice.

You will be working with a variety of tools to produce arange of content that can be reviewed formatively and assessed summatively.

Thes tasks will involve background supporting reading, laboratory practicals, digital casestudies, and workshops that will generate content for assessment.Formative Sessions

The first practical will introduce you to the core observational tools of the moderndiagnostic laboratory (the compound light microscope and digital pathology) and helpyou to observe, describe and report your observations scientifically. This session isnot assessed directly, but reinforces important skills, including the preparation offigures, for the assessed components.

Summative Assessment
Case Studies Part 1 LOs 1, 2, 3, and 4(1)

In the first few practical and workshop sessions you will be introduced to arange of case studies and examples. From these you will be expected toproduce two individual figures with labelled images that identify
pathognomonic criteria correctly.

These will be supported by a short legend (of<250 words each) with comments on what, if any, additional evidence isrequired for managing the disease. The focus will be on non-neoplasticdisease.(2) In Lab 4 you will be using an immunohistochemical technique to demonstratethe presence and histological distribution of (cyto)keratins in selected tissues. The practical will be assessed by means of a critical evaluation of the resultspresented as a figure with a commentary. The figure will consist of a suitablepanel of annotated images supported by informative legend. The commentary will include a critical evaluation of the outcome of your teams staining results. You should consider the quality of both the immunohistochemical staining(distribution, contrast, specificity, background) along with its negative control, and its Haematoxylin counterstain (colour, intensity, background). You should also evaluate the role of immunohistochemistry in modern diagnosticpathology and research (1000 < word count < 1500 words)
