Research Project : 6 pages
A. The purpose of research paper is to answer questions. Everyone does research – for instance, when you shop for a car, you don’t just walk in a buy the first one you see (I hope). You need to have specific goals and questions that needed answers (e.g. cost, style, economy, reliability, etc.) A research paper is simply a formal, written expression of your research. You may write on any topic of your choosing.
B. Content of research paper: Urban Legend of Lake Lanier in Georgia research the following:
1. The story as it is currently told
2. Any variants on the story
3. The history of the legend: a) What is the oldest report of this story? b) Do there appear to be substantiated facts that are a basis for the story?
4. What is the appeal of the legend? Does it coincide with other events? Is it more popular with certain groups (age, geography, education, politics, religion, culture, etc.)
C. Point Breakdown:
1.Annotated bibliography (85 points)
2.Paper due July 29 (200 points) :
a)100 points for content (the 6-8 pages does not count the Works Cited page)
b)100 points for MLA format (-3 per error)
D. Research must consist of only secondary research (no interviews or field research). You need to find at least eight sources. You will document all eight in your annotated bibliography and use at least six in your final paper. Note, you are finding more than you will use. It is unreasonably optimistic to expect the first six sources you find to be the best. You have to do some reading to find material that you can use. Remember, your annotated Bibliography will list all works found doing your research, but your works cited will only list those works actually cited in the paper.
E. Rhetoric of Research:
a) Writer – Formal vocabulary and tone, knowledgeable.
b) Reader – assume general knowledge/ lack of specific knowledge.
c) Things to consider when choosing a subject:
(1) Interest
(2) Availability
(3) Do-abilicixty in 6 pages (narrow topic)
