During this term, you were assigned to read either Anne Fadimans The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Culture or Yang Erche Namu and Christine Mathieus Leaving Mother Lake: A Girlhood at the Edge of the World. For this second Response Paper, draw upon your respective text, as well as our textbook by Barbara Miller, Cultural Anthropology, lectures, and additional course materials to provide an anthropological analysis of the events that have transpired in Fadimans and Namu and Mathieus books.
Instructions:
Your Response Paper will consist of two sections:
Section 1 (400 Words): Describe your overall thoughts and reactions to Fadimans or Namu and Mathieus narrative. What was a major take-away for you? Did your feeling towards to book, individuals, themes, etc., discussed change between your first paper and now? Where do you see the significance of cultural anthropology in this book? Refer to specific examples from the text.
Section 2 (800 Words): Apply the anthropological and ethnographic materials you have read from Miller, additional texts, and lectures to either Fadimans or Namu and Mathieus work. For this section, you must draw upon and utilize five reliable sources in your response and include a works cited at the end of the paper.
If you are reading Fadiman: The United States is a nation of immigrants which continues to receive people from various countries, cultures, faiths, languages, etc. In this section, you must first select a contemporary immigrant population arriving in America. Who are they? Where are they from? What factors in their homeland are contributing to their migration? Next, consider a medical and health issue that faces this population and how it is/has been treated in their home country. Finally, taking an anthropological approach, how might someone research and conduct an ethnography about said medical and health issue to medical professionals here in the United States?
If you are reading Namu and Mathieu: Since the Cultural Revolution brought about by the Chinese communist government, Moso traditional life has experienced a significant number of changes. These shifts include not only technology and political theory, but family practices and other influences brought about by tourism. In this section, consider how cultures like to Moso are being forced to adapt to external influences and their struggle to maintain a sense of culture. In this section, you must first select a contemporary culture experiencing similar cultural pressures like to Moso. Who are they? Where are they from? What factors in their homeland are shaping their culture? Next, consider an aspect of their culture that is being challenged and shaped by globalization/colonization/tourism, etc., whatever the issue may be. How is it changing and why? Finally, taking an anthropological approach, how might someone research and conduct an ethnography about this aspect of culture to document, preserve, and potentially promote its perpetuation into the future.
Combined, all three sections will amount to 1200 total words.
