The first formal essay for this course invites you to practice the rhetorical skills of textual synthesis and analysis. After reading the texts from the first part of the term, you will write an essay that answers the following question:
Select a character from the novel Christine. How does the way the character is represented reinforce and/or resist 19th-century attitudes about either womens place in public life or womens essential difference?
As you answer this question, you will draw specific examples from the literary texts to support your claim(s). In addition to referring to Christine, you should use the readings and related materials from the first five course modules to develop your essay. You should refer to at least two of these related sources. You may not use any other sources other than those included in the course modules (you may refer to a source from the class presentations). Your essay should, as appropriate, differentiate/compare/contrast between the sources.
Your essay should be 1,000-1,250-words in length, typed, double-spaced, using MLA conventions for citation style and document format. Your essay will be evaluated based on the Writing Evaluation Rubric
