Purpose:

The purpose of this literature review is to present an understanding of the existing research and debates relevant to the study of cognitive and affective neuroscience as it relates to the field of counselling and psychotherapy.

Process:

Perform a literature search for relevant published information relating to counselling and psychotherapy through the lens of cognitive and affective neuroscience. Restrict your search to sources published in the past five years if possible and no later than ten years.

Identify existing scholarly knowledge on the topic of cognitive and affective neuroscience
Compare and contrast current research
Evaluate the research and support your evaluation
Identify problems or gaps in existing knowledge
Included in your literature review:

An introduction should define the topic, provide an appropriate context for reviewing the literature, and explain the organisation of your literature review.
Main body of organised ideas and common themes gleaned from your research.
A conclusion summarising the major findings of the literature review, with an evaluative statement about the current views on neuroscience as it relates to the counselling profession; major gaps or flaws in the study of the topic and an outline of areas for future study.
