It has been recognized for many years that the analysis of data and information is a powerful way to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of law enforcement operations. One of the earliest efforts at employing data-driven policing was the New York City Police Department’s CompStat program. Since its inception, CompStat has evolved and been modified for use by many departments across the country, though often under different names. When CompStat became “old hat”, other data-driven methodologies, including intelligence-led policing (ILP), came on the scene.
Though they share some similarities, the two methodologies have many differences.
DB#3 Requirements – *this a grad level reasoning, link-analysis and thought processing course and yet some do not answer to all the requirements in assignments. To help guide you in how to break that down, I separated out the requirements down into segments & highlighted in red the sub-components that you are to address. Hopefully this soon will become second nature and you will be able to break down these elements on your own if you had been provided with the below in a paragraph format.
I) Using your understanding of CompStat and ILP based on Carter, Chapter 5 and other sources (i.e., do some research), compare and contrast the two methodologies. You can include other data-driven approaches (e.g., problem-oriented policing) if you feel it’s relevant,
II) along with your opinion of what value crime mapping provides and should it still be used or discarded…??
III) Also factor in the impact that emerging and future technology will have on managing intelligence analysis functions regarding data-driven methodologies and crime-mapping.
I am not looking for the class repeating back what is already in the coursework or additional material. I’m looking for your unique and individual thought processing, articulation and assessments
for example, in:
I) using your Understanding – Compare & Contrast, the unwritten requirement here is state, by your understanding of the two, which one is better and why…
II) Your opinion means – your opinion…
III) factor in (means your understanding of what the impact will be from emerging and future technology on managing intelligence analysis functions regarding data-driven methodologies and crime-mapping
