Stress is real and kill.This activity is designed to get you thinking about the range of events, thoughts, stress reactions, and coping mechanisms you might see in college students. The activity requires you to brainstorm first and then reduce your list of ideas to the best three or four. You are to write a paper and answer the questions listed below for each category.
I. Stressors
Discuss 5 stressful situations that are common in the life of college students. These can include discrete life events such as taking final exams or breaking up with boyfriend/girlfriend or more prolonged situations such as not having enough money or driving an unreliable car. Identify and discuss 2 of the most common stressors facing students.
II. Stress-related thoughts
Discuss at 5 thoughts that you or others commonly think tend to inflate stress reactions. Sometimes called catastrophic thoughts, they can be about the event (This is the worst thing that ever happened.); about the expected consequences of the event (If I have to face her again, Ill die of embarrassment.); or about the individuals perceived capacity to deal with the event (I know I cannot deal with these situations.). Identify and discuss 2 of the most common stressors facing students.
III. Stress Reactions
These can include behaviors such as irritability or crying or medical conditions such as headache or nausea. Ask if the psychophysiological conditions listed in the book (asthma, ulcer, hypertension, migraine, and tension headaches) are commonplace.
IV. Coping Methods
Individual coping and stress.That you are dealing with . These can include outward behaviors such as talking with friends and shopping or more internal reactions such as meditating or praying. Some coping mechanisms are focused on reducing bad feelings while others directly attack the problem at hand.
