In Lecture 1, we discussed the Election of 1876 (Hayes vs Tilden). We also discussed how the results of the election ended with the Great Compromise of 1877. However, history textbooks rarely discuss other candidates. Oliver Hazard Perry Throck Morton (whew!) ran on the Republican ticket.
As you read through the article “A Bloody Shirt and a Pair of Ruby Lips” and address the questions regarding the article, please remember to keep historical context in mind. Context is important to help us understand what motivated people and why people behave the way they did. Rather than judge them on contemporary standards, I encourage you to try to understand the people and events and try to interpret why they did what they did.
For example, when it came to the European Witch-hunts, fear led their reasonings for the accusations. Fear for the community, but mainly in protecting the soul of the witch. Salvation was EVERYTHING to people in this time period. It was the duty of the magistrate to make sure he/she confessed so their soul will be saved. However, by confessing, he/she was now going to be put to death because witchcraft was a capital crime, punishable by death. We may think all of this is crazy, but if you put yourself in the historical context, you may understand the reasoning behind the madness.
