SAMPLE FIRST POST:

TOPICS: HUMANITIES AND MY EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS.

When I was seventeen years old, in my first semester in college, I read the Apology of Plato and discovered Greek philosophy. I couldn’t get enough of Socrates; a wise man who claimed he was not wise; a man who made a fool of his false accusers in court, but was found guilty anyway and put to death. The Apology inspired me to learn more about philosophy and Greek philosophy in particular. I caught the philosophy bug, which I learned much later some philosophers described as ‘an itch’. I did not understand that philosophy was a discipline in ‘the humanities’. I did not know what the humanities were, really. I now teach humanities; still, I cannot define precisely where some other disciplines, like sociology, end, and ‘the humanities’ begin. These sorts of questions are not that important to me. But it is important to have some understanding of the relationships among certain kinds of disciplines traditionally grouped in the humanities, and certain common traits of disciplines that belong in the humanities, like shared methodologies.

I did know from high school that I liked reading, writing, speaking, imagination, and conceptual tasks (I don’t think I knew the term ‘analytical’ in my teens). I thought about being a lawyer because in my imagination I thought that lawyers did such things and got well paid. I also liked music and languages, but I could not comprehend the relationships between these disciplines, and how developing this knowledge formed me, in many ways, as a person. Linguistic skills, analytical skills, and knowledge, like knowledge of history, philosophy and classical literature, would all come together eventually in my education; an education rooted in the humanities.

NOTE: You may also write about the humanities and your beliefs and personal experiences. Reflect on the topics. Now that you know something about the humanities, what does it have to do with you?
