Since the death of Mahsa Amini three months ago, mass protests have rocking Iran. Girls and university students have been leading the protests, chanting anti-government slogans, burning their headscarves, and cutting off their hair, while clashes w/ police have broken in schools, universities, and prisons where political prisoners are held. Peaceful protests have been organized outside Iran too; a month ago, Iran’s football team refused to sing the Iranian national anthem at the World Cup in Qatar while fans have chanted slogans outside of stadiums.
Amid these current developments, I thought it’ll be most relevant for the class to research current music censorship in Iran.
You should research online (scholarly sources are not required but aim for reputable sources) and introduce the current state of music censorship in Iran. Are certain musical genres/musicians affected more than others? Refer to particular cases of music censorship that youve encountered during your research. Use at least two sources. Scholarly sources are not required but aim for reputable sources.
Requirements:
Length: 350-400 words (you can exceed the max. limit)
Two sources (you are welcome to use more than two)
Use in-text citations and include a works-cited page
Cite your sources properly (feel free to use the citation style you are familiar with)
Include your name and a title
Tips:
Focus on music! How is music suppressed/affected by laws, cultural values, political/religious regulations?
Research the status of censorship over the past 5 years. You may contextually, but briefly, discuss the Islamic Revolution of 1979, but make sure that you primarily address current cases of music censorship
Avoid lengthy introductions. Get straight to the point!
Provide full bibliographic info (author’s name, title of article, etc), properly formatted and not just urls
