Final Summary Paper :
Additional information about how to submit your paper is available in Course Documents. The summary paper should be double spaced, use 12-point font, Times New Roman, and have 1 margins. (See requirements for formatting your paper below.) Your summary paper will be assessed according to the writing rubric on this syllabus. This essentially means your grade for this assignment is based minimally on spelling and grammar, but the bulk of the grade is based on the content of your paper.
The summary paper asks you to reflect cumulatively on the content you learned in this course. Your paper will interact with literally everything you learn in this class based on 5 specific questions I ask you to answer (see below). My advice is to give this paper the time it deserves. It is not a hard paper in the sense of difficult concepts; but it is a hard paper in that it requires you to analyze and assess the historical knowledge you gained this semester.
I would also suggest that you answer as many of these questions as you can at particular intervals during the semester, such as the paragraph on Ben Witheringtons book immediately following our online discussion of it. Pacing yourself with this paper will result in better writing and deeper analysis.
You should devote at least 1 page to answer each question fully and completely, but there is no maximum limit to the length of your answers. Conversely, at minimum your paper should be 5 pages long. While I do pay attention to the length of your paper, please know that a longer paper does not automatically translate into a better grade. I am far more concerned about the content in your paper, as opposed to length specifically. Please note that your answers come from class notes that you take, reading assignments, and online discussions. You are not required to conduct additional research for this paper outside of what is assigned for this class.
Answer the following questions for your summary paper:
Page 1: In your opinion, outside of Jesus and Socrates, according to content you learned in this class who is the most important person in the history of Western Civilization? How did they impact society and why are they important?
Page 2: In light of reading and online discussions of Ben Witheringtons book on Corinth, discuss three new historical facts you learned about early Christianity and discuss why they are important to you.
Page 3: Write a paragraph that responds to this statement: Based on the Historical Geography concepts, and a more developed and extensive knowledge of geography acquired during the course of the semester, I believe geography impacted the history of Western Civilization in the following ways . . . (come up with @ least two reasons).
Page 4: For this question, pick either chapter 4, 5, or 6 from John Feas book and write a paragraph that interacts with the contents of the chapter. In other words, answer the following questions about the chapter you picked. What is this chapter about? Why is this chapter important? I agree with Fea on this point because, or I disagree with Fea on this point because or, I wish Fea would have elaborated on this point because
Page 5: Based on ch. 7 and the Epilogue from John Feas book about historys transformative power, discuss how and why the study of Western Civilization this semester challenged and/or enhanced your understanding of history (come up with @ least two reasons). In other words, what have you learned about history this semester, and why do you think it is important and/or beneficial?
