When IQ tests were introduced, many stereotypes came into being based on misunderstandings of the use of these instruments. Many point out that the tests were developed by white, middle-class males. For this reason, many rightly argue that white, middle-class males naturally scored better on the tests. Based on this performance, false assumptions were made that some groups were more, or less, intelligent than others. Non-whites, southerners and other groups were often deemed to be less intelligent. Time has clearly shown these early assumptions to be false. The bias in the tests is now better understood; however, some still hold to these false assumptions.
