Essay 2 Instructions

For this assignment you will write a 45 page paper (a minimum of 4 full pages of original written work) in response to ONE of the prompts below. Use Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, double spaced. Be sure to include the cover sheet at the beginning of your uploaded document (but dont count it as one of your pages). Quote from the novel but also include quotations from 35 of the scholarly, peer-reviewed essays listed below. At the end of your essay there should be a Works Cited page with entries for Crime and Punishment and your research in MLA format (also not counted toward the minimum length of your essay).

Option 1:
What does the novel show us about freedom and its relationship to law? For example, can one obey the law and still be free? Or perhaps, is obedience to the law the only way to be free? Is there another option? Use relevant passages from the novel to support your opinion.

Option 2:
What does the novel say about resurrection? Consider the passages mentioning the story of Lazarus especially, and relate them to the plot of the novel.

Option 3:
Are justice and forgiveness opposed in this novel, or can they work together? Explain. Be sure not to limit your argument to the perspective of only one character. You may want to especially consider the characters of Sonya and Katerina Ivanovna.
