Coaching is a continual process of performance improvement through employee evaluations and motivation. Coaching requires leaders to provide feedback. Coaching helps build a relationship with specific goals, desired outcomes, shared goals, and organizational goals set. Mentoring is broader in its scope and requires a long-term commitment, and they must be matched with their mentee(s) (MUSE). Mentors typically focus on offering support to increase employee growth (Intellipath). Coaching is the most effective way to develop employees. Coaches must have the ability to observe, discuss, create a coaching plan, and follow up with that plan. Coaches can improve performance, productivity, and job performance. “Coaching is one of the most promising ways of supporting individuals and groups in personal and professional development, however, it cannot be used to solve every problem” (Rutar Ilc, Tacer, arkovi Adlei, 2014.) Mentors duties include listening, supporting, being a role model, and being a strategist. relationships between mentors and mentees are marked by closeness, empathy, authenticity, and companionship (Rhodes et al. 2006; Spencer 2006). In addition, these relationships are collaborative and mutual (Spencer 2006).
I believe that in my adulthood, and work experience I have always been a witness to some form of coaching. I would say that my current part-time employment would be a suitable example. I am a part-time sales associate or team member at our local shoe store. When a new employee is hired, they must do onboarding, which includes several questionnaires and videos. Upon completion of the onboarding, the manager or assistant manager is tasked with teaching the new employee on how to operate certain applications within the system. This process lasts about two (2) weeks, at which point the employee must pass a computer-generated test in their knowledge of everything that has been shown or demonstrated to them. The strategies that are implemented are a clear statement of goals, giving feedback while observing performance, and recognizing performance or accomplishments. I believe the strategies are effective because we have a very welcoming environment, and a small staff, so we were all trained the same way. If a customer has a question for one team member that they cannot answer, another team member is there to assist. Often, if it a computer or system-related issue, the more knowledgeable team member will take care of the problem, and then when the store is clear of customers, we show the team member what steps were taken so that they will know how to handle it in the future.
To be a good coach, you must be able to motivate, inspire and empower your team. You must listen to your team, ask questions, be empathetic or show concern and be supportive. A successful coach must also create and maintain a positive work environment.
