“As we will discuss in class, John Gottman (psychologist and researcher) described The Four Horsemen: Criticism, Contempt, Stonewalling, & Defensiveness. Understanding these is so important in research, but also in our own personal relationships! As damaging as they are (i.e., predictors of divorce), we see them happening quite frequently in our own lives and in popular media. For this assignment, you’ll look for media examples that display the four horsemen. Here’s what you’ll do:
1. Identify FOUR examples (one example per horsemen) of these occurring in popular media (e.g., tv show, movie, Tik Tok, YouTube video/clip, snapchat story, comic strip, Instagram story, etc.) THEY MUST BE EXAMPLES FROM ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS…not friends, family, etc.
2. For each example, make sure you state which of the four horsemen the example is referring to
3. Attach evidence of that popular media that I can access. In other words, post a screen shot, link, etc., so that I can go and view your example!
4. Under each example, describe (small paragraph) why you chose that example and what the people in your example could’ve done better (i.e., a healthy behavior) rather than engaging in that horsemen behavior.
5. can be presented on any medium of your choice (e.g., PowerPoint, Canva, word, pdf file, etc.)
