This essay is arguably the most important assignment of the entire course. This is an opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned and are passionate about.

Establish a thesis; be clear with your opinions and conscious of putting your imagery into historical context. Remember, a primary goal of this class is to help you expand your knowledge of photography’s continuum so that you can apply that precedent as a springboard to your own expression about how you can add to that standard. This means, then, that your essay will be evaluated in terms of how clearly you understand the precedent you identify and how originally and cohesively you make or organize photographs related to that precedent.

When you write about your subjective responses to a photograph, remember to continually return to the image itself for the evidence to support your ideas. Make specific references to details in your imagery. Be explicit and avoid generalizations.

Before beginning your essay, it would be advantageous for you to read some critical writing about photography. Go to the library and review some monographs or a gallery to review some shows and make a note of what is said by critics and scholars in the introductions. Visit some museums and read the curatorial and artist statements accompanying the exhibitions. Try to be attentive to how an exhibit or photograph is informed by historical context, and see if you can identify the intent of both the photographer in making the image and the curator in organizing the photos.

Papers must be word-processed (PDF or DOC files only), double-spaced, with outside research sources appropriately footnoted and referenced.

I chose Andy Warhol because his work with the Ladies and Gentlemen series inspired me to pursue alternate creative ways of post-production. The way he took an image, turned it into a print, and then painted over it inspired me to create colorful works of art through post-production in Lightroom. There also needs to be a tie-in of the historical context of Warhol’s work (his original photography work specifically his Ladies and Gentlemen series. His Documentary on Netflix is where I got the idea so preferably that would be one of the sources used.

The images I made need to be included in the paper as well as the example images of Warhol’s work all of which I have attached and labeled
