Some have argued that minority populations, including Latinx, African-Americans, and Asian-Americans, are better represented by elected officials who share their racial, ethnic, or cultural traits because only someone from their group can understand the challenges and obstacles they have had to experience. For example, if you are Latino/a/x, it is the idea that a Latino/a/x representative will do a better job representing you than someone who is white. This is known as descriptive representation.
