Watch a reality television show that features a primary group or work group that must make decisions such as Survivor, Top Chef, or Big Brother, etc. If the reality show that you want to watch is not currently airing on television, go to a search engine such as Netflix, Amazon, or YouTube. To search for a show such as Survivor on YouTube type the following phrase: Survivor Full Episode. With this search, you should be able to find an entire episode to watch for no cost.

Please do not choose a show where you consider a panel of judges to be a small group such as Cake Wars on the Food Network. In shows such as this they do not reveal enough of the judges conversation to base a reflection on.

Once you find a show to watch, address the following in an essay:

First, identify the show you watched and the type of group you are observing (primary group or work group). Explain how you were able to identify whether the group is a primary group or a work group.

Second, how did the group utilize decision-making procedures? In other words, when the group was faced with making a decision, what process did they use to arrive at a decision? Was the technique they used effective or ineffective? Explain.

Third, as a small group communication student you should have some knowledge in different decision making procedures. Choose one from chapter 7 and explain how that technique could have helped the group in the television show be more effective. Explain why this technique would have been more effective.

Fourth, describe the relational communication created by the members of the group in your television show.

Fifth, now that you have analyzed a group from an outsiders perspective by watching a reality television show, you should have a well-rounded perspective of how groups can work more effectively by using formal decision-making procedures. Now, as part of your reflection, discuss obstacles in your own group that you are experiencing and how you can use decision-making procedures to solve problems.

Paper Requirements:

Typed, double spaced, 12 point font, New Times Roman

3-4 pages in length (this does not mean 2.5 pages is acceptable)
