Finally, in addition to analyzing the work, a review often suggests whether or not the audience would appreciate it and explains why.
Writing a review is a two-step process: developing an argument about the work under consideration and supporting that argument as you write an organized and well-supported draft.
In reading the book, you should think about the following general questions:
What is the thesisor main argumentof the book? If the author wanted you to get one idea from the book, what would it be? How does it compare or contrast to the world you know? What has the book accomplished?
What is the context of the book? What exactly is the subject or topic of the book? Does the author cover the subject adequately?
Does any of the authors information (or conclusions) conflict with other ideas about the context of the book you may have learned in class, in other readings or discussions, or just previous assumptions you had of the subject?
How has this book helped you understand the subject? Would you recommend the book to your reader? Why or why not?
Once you have made your observations and assessments of the work under review, carefully survey your notes and attempt to unify your impressions into a statement that will describe the purpose or thesis of your review.
While you are reading the book, your ultimate goal is to answer the following analytical questions in your book review through the process described above:
In your opinion, what is the purpose of this book?
How well does the author achieve this purpose?
According to the author, how does one tell a true story? Do you think the stories told in this book are true? Do you think it changes the value of the book if the stories are a work of fiction? Why or why not?
Would you recommend this book to someone who wanted to know more about the experience of life in the 1940s or life for Black women? Why or why not?
