Observed Messiah is deaf. Messiahs math ability is on grade level. Often times, he has difficulty with following the directions and vocabulary of math. I have observed Messiah has difficulty with following the steps of a problem. He is able to do well when there are examples and his computation skills are strong. He prefers to work alone and group projects are difficult for him because he easily distracts other with off task noises. He is out of his control. Even though he is on grade level with most of the math concepts, he makes self-deprecating remarks about his ability and will shut down in a group and annoy his peers with distracting noises.
1.) Choose a behavior of concern for 1-2 students (it is a good idea to consult with your cooperating teacher for advice). Examples include: walking out of the class, socializing with peers during instruction, incompletion of work, calling out in class, walking around the room.
2.) Take data on the behavior for approximately 10 minutes. IF you can, take data 3-5 times for 10 minutes for baseline. This baseline data can be taken on consecutive days. Duration recording or event recording would be recommended for data collection.
3.) Talk to the student. Show the student your data. Say you want to help the student (to get more work done, to be more successful in XX Reading, Writing, etc.).
4.) With the student, discuss HOW you will help. What one strategy did you decide to try to improve the behavior?
5.) At least once a week for at least 4 more weeks, take data again. Take data in the same method and for the same amount of time as you did during baseline.
6.) Create a graph of your data.
7.) Reflect on your results.
Your paper can be structured in this way (approximately 3 pages total):
1.) Description of the behavior of concern
2.) Description of the strategy chosen to remediate the behavior
3.) Graph of your data (baseline and during intervention)
4.) Reflection on your results and what you learned from completing this project (about one page)
