Typically, we study heritability by comparing the similarity identical twins show for a particular trait (e.g. whether they share a psychiatric disorder or not) to the similarity shown by non-identical twins. These twin studies indicate that most psychiatric disorders are highly heritable, particularly schizophrenia and autism. This would suggest that genetics are important in psychiatric risk, and this, therefore, supports biological explanations for psychiatric disorders, though many researchers argue that environmental factors play at least as important a role.
