Review of Relevant Literature and Methods
Your review of relevant literature and your methods(i.e. how you propose to carry out the research)is the third and final step of your Research Proposal Project. These are likely the most advanced research skills addressed in this project and the review of relevant literature will likely take you more time than any other aspect of the project. This submission should be 4-5 pages and address the following:(1)Review of Relevant Literature: you will combine, pair together, and think across a number of different articles to review the current state of what research tells us about your particular research topic and questions. Using four academic articles from the course and three additional academic articles (articles published in peer-reviewed academic journals) from outside the course, detail what research currently tells us about your topic and research questions .Make sure to include what previous studies have found, how the author(s) explain or justify their findings, and the implications or suggestions for future research (typically toward the end of articles) authors include in those articles You can then examine results to determine which articles are most relevant to your topic and questions and see how often other researchers cite each particular article (i.e.one measure of significance with an academic field). (2)Methods: You will need to select methods for your proposed study. “Education” is a field of study; “sociology” or “economics” are academic disciplines. You will need to be more specific than these common terms to describe specifically how you will study your participants, where or through what medium you will study them, and how many times or how frequently you want to study them (e.g., once at the beginning of the school year and once at the end of the school year).Common methods include teacher interviews, student focus groups, quantitative data analysis using student outcomes or national education data, classroom observations, community meeting observations, surveys with questions specific to your research, document analysis of relevant policies or laws, and archival analysis using historical documents. Questions to consider include:(a)Will you conduct your research in-person, online,or through another method?(b)Will you include participants in a particular geographic area (i.e. San Diego area high school students)?(c)Will you seek a national sample with participants and data from around the country or even different countries around the world?
