According to Bennett and Royle (citing Viktor Shklovsky), “figurative language has the capacity to ‘defamiliarize’ our world – to refigure, reform, revolutionize” (83). Poets seem to have been particularly responsive to this feature of literariness. Identify and discuss instances of figuration in three of the poems we have read under the heading “Modernist Poetry” (except for Dickinson’s poem “A Bird came down the Walk–“, which is analyzed by Bennett and Royle). Do not choose two or more works by the same poet. In your analysis of the instances of figuration, account for their contribution to the form (speaker and tone, rhetorical strategies, syntax, and poem structure, i.e. rhythm, verse form, and rhyming pattern, if applicable) and the thematic content of the literary texts under consideration. Write an essay between 1500 and 2000 words, including quotations and works cited. Follow the MLA citation style norms.
