Based on the activity, choose a stereotype that you passionately think is harmful for the group that it stereotypes. Research that stereotype, analyze its meaning, and examine the various ways it is spread and the potential or real harm that it causes both at the individual and societal level. Then write an essay arguing the harmfulness of that specific societal stereotype and its impact on our society. Rather than write generally about stereotyping, I suggest that you select a societal group (gender, LGBTQ+, specific race, specific ethnic group, old people, teenagers, homeless etc.) and analyze the role of society (media could be an example) in perpetuating stereotype of that group. You could show how the representation of that group (on TV, films, news etc.) is misinformed, harmful, and even dangerous. Analyze why the larger society may have such a view, provide evidence to show why they are wrong, explain what harm we do by continuing to perpetuate such ideas or views, and illustrate what can be gained by being more sensitive and aware of the harm that comes with the use of such stereotypes.
You could even pick a specific expression, color (for example, pink), clothing etc. and analyze it to show how society or a specific film, drama, song, or ads use of that expression, color, clothing etc. as a representation of a specific group is very problematic in terms of what values and ideas it promotes.

2. Select a category that you identified with during the class activity and write an essay showing how that kind of stereotyping is misinformed, harmful, and even dangerous. Analyze why the larger society may have such a view, provide evidence to show why they are wrong, explain what harm we do by continuing to perpetuate such ideas or views, and illustrate what can be gained by having a more nuanced and realistic notion. Here are a few things that you could do to write this essay:
Show why the prevailing idea is a stereotype
Pivot to show (with evidence) how people have internalized that stereotype
Analyze the social condition to show why this has happened
What is the harm as a result
What could we do to break that cycle …
You have to find and use good supporting details to convince readers to accept your argument. Or
3. Argue that too much has been made of a specific stereotype – that cultural policing and censoring of peoples language is actually more harmful than the stereotype in question. To make your point, I suggest that you pick a specific stereotype and analyze it instead of
making a generalized argument about censorship or cancel culture. Please refrain from just spouting opinion. Rather provide strong evidence to support your claim.

Listen to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichies TedTalk The Danger of a Single Story (https://www.ted.com/talks/chimamanda_ngozi_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story?l anguage=en) and use her talk to argue about the danger of single representation of a societal stereotype. Show with strong evidence that society (the media as an example) has overplayed only one story of that group to create a misrepresentation that is harmful. Provide different stories of that group and argue for multiple representations that tell a more nuanced and realistic story of that group.

bell hooks writes that
Embracing love ethic means that we utilize all dimensions of love —
in our everyday lives. When a person,
that they are guided by a love ethic. For hooks, as seen in her essay Love as the Practice
of Freedom, practicing love ethic means turning away from the power or domination.
Even the socially sanctioned and traditional conception of love of family or between
husband and wife doesnt completely fulfill this love ethic because power dynamic is in
play in such relationships. For this project, you will read bell hooks essay Love as
Practice of Freedom and engage in selfless love by
completing a meaningful activity for someone you love but to whom you dont show love enough. Even better, go out to your
neighbor or community, especially to folks with whom you dont interact, and assist them with a meaningful activity. Then write a paper analyzing that experience and, in the process, argue whether that was a worthwhile act and/or why your reader should or shouldnt partake in it. Using bell hooks argument in her essay Love as Practice of Freedom, critically assess how meaningful that act of love was, how it impacted you, and how developing an ethic based on love could or could not radically alter our society.
Requirements:
– Thesis driven
– Organized (strong hook in the introduction that ends with a strong thesis statement; body
paragraphs that start with topic sentence, are coherent, and fully developed; a compelling
conclusion)
– Strong, relevant, and sufficient evidence that support the claim in the thesis statement
– Strong reason & logic (logos) along with appeal to ethos, pathos, and kairos
– Length: 3-4 pages without the works cited page
– Proper MLA format: identifying information, appropriate title, one-inch margin all around, double spaced lines
