Discuss people’s moral obligations to their sexual partners. (3-4 paragraphs).
Begin by explaining why there is a moral obligation to have consent from one’s partner when engaging in sexual activity with them. You may use any of the theories we’ve discussed to inform your answer.
Then, explain the difference between weakly and strongly caring for someone as a person (this is from the lecture slides), and explain Lois Pineau’s argument that people have a moral obligation to “strongly” care (in the philosophical sense) for their sexual partners. Do you agree or disagree with her conclusion, and why?
Finally, explain the difference between wanting to do something and being willing to do something. Robin West claims that people can consent to sex that they don’t want, and unwanted sex is not always harmful and/or immoral (although it sometimes is). What is one of West’s examples of unwanted sex that isn’t harmful or immoral? What would an example of harmful and/immoral unwanted sex be?
