W6 Assignment 1: Energy flow through ecosystems presentation

TEXT BOOK _______https://openstax.org/details/books/concepts-biology ______ Purpose: This assignment will dissect an ecosystem in a particular region applying our knowledge of an ecosystems cycles to create a realistic food web and explain the energy flow through an ecosystem. Identifying components of an ecosystem and how each contribution is essential to understanding the earth and our place in it.

Think of a national park you recently visited, a place you’d like to visit, or the pond in the park near your house. Choose one location and make a slideshow describing an ecosystem you would find there. Make a video (slideshow + voice-over) 5-7 minutes in length and upload it to Canvas. Review the resource on creating presentations if needed.

Slide 1: Your name, date, and title for the assignment

Slide 2: Introduce your ecosystem, including a photo. Explain how an ecosystem differs from a community or habitat. Identify the abiotic and biotic components of the ecosystem.

Slide 3: Create a food web with the organisms of that ecosystem, modeled after Figure 20.6 in the eTextbook. Include at least 2 producers, 3 primary consumers, 3 secondary consumers, and 1 tertiary consumer. Introduce the organisms in the food web and explain the orders of consumption. Identify the expected predators in the food web and briefly explain what would happen to the predator population if a certain prey population either increased or decreased.

Slide 4: Convert your food web into a trophic pyramid with 4 trophic levels. (Review Figure 20.5 in the eTextbook or the video Trophic Level Pyramid). Indicate what organism(s) occupies each level and explain the transfer of energy from one level to the next, stating first the source of the energy for the bottom level.

Slide 5: Convert your original food web to a detrital food web by showing at least 3 detritivores. Introduce the detritivores and explain their role in the ecosystem.

Slide 6: Summarize the role of abiotic influence on biotic components (mention the role of producers, consumers, and decomposers) on a thriving ecosystem by predicting what might happen to the ecosystem if a certain abiotic factor was drastically changed. (Review sections 20.3 and 20.4 in the eTextbook for ideas.) Abiotic refers to the nonliving factors in an ecosystem, such as rainwater, rocks, soil type, the nitrogen levels in soil, etc.

Slide 7: List all sources used in APA format and show them in your presentation.
