According to Kelly & Quesnelle (2016), quality improvement is a purposeful structured system that is used to create, plan, and implement change to ensure that all members of an organization are working collaboratively to achieve and provide excellent client care. Quality care is achieved when members of the organization participate in modalities of quality improvement. To exemplify, a common threat to patient safety and quality for patients with mental health problems in the emergency department is overcrowding and staffing shortages. In this scenario, lack of public funding for outpatient mental health care services contributes to continued access to emergency department for care needs, thus obtaining interventions to improve access to recourses is needed (Letvak & Rhew, 2015) . Understanding the needs of patients and their expectations of care while addressing the gap in the services provided allows for the observation of opportunities for improvement. Quality improvement can be developed by observing improvement opportunities and participating in decision making to improve a system or process based on data reflecting care needs. Utilizing this data will alert care providers and levels of management to focus in on barriers to provide quality care for patients. In addition, providing education to ensure members are knowledgeable and aware further improved quality assurance. Thus, involvement of leadership and committed support is necessary to ensure positive outcome when organizations want to achieve improvements towards quality service (Kelly & Quesnelle, 2016, p.374).
