A central question in any religion is, what are the sources of authority that should shape the beliefs and practices of adherents? That is, to what or to whom should one turn to for answers to basic questions and for ethical guidance?
Give examples of how disputes over the sources of authority have shaped the history of Christianity, with at least one example each from:
1. the early church,
2. the Reformation era, and
3. the modern period.
In each case, explain the issue clearly and show its significance in the history of the religion and the lives of believers.
